Should I get a(nother) Master's degree?

Spring is in the air! I can certainly feel it here in Sweden, where we expect spring to arrive in March, but it's not really until now that we approach April that it's starting to warm up.
Spring is also a time of year when many people apply to study in the fall and a common question I get is "Should I get a degree in ...something?"
The answer is (most likely) "no". Especially when we're talking about "another" Master’s degree. A first Masters (or Bachelors for that matter) is a different story, and definitely something to consider.
For most roles in the UN, the level of education is more important than your field of study. International roles usually require a Masters in something specific, "or related", and the interpretation of what's "related" is in most cases quite generous.
There might be valid reasons for you to study in order to re-direct your career, or build certain expertise. However, for the majority of people with a Master’s degree already, who are just trying to figure out how they can increase their chances in UN recruitment processes, more work experience is the key, not another degree.
If you've got plenty of work experience but not getting offers, it might be time to optimize your application or sharpen your interviewing skills rather than pursuing further academic qualifications.
