Motiavation matters

Have you had a chance to reflect on why, oh why, you want to work for the UN?
I find it really valuable to sometimes pause and ponder, and when it comes to working for the UN, I'd say it's essential.
It's true that your motivation won't make a difference if you don't meet the job requirements. But when you do meet them, very little may differentiate you from other qualified candidates, so every part of your application counts. How you articulate your motivation will either add credibility to your candidature, or detract from it.
Many candidates apply for UN jobs with a broad notion of wanting to "do something meaningful" or "contribute to humanity", which is fine, but it's too generic to make their candidacy stick out. It rather signals that they only have a surface level idea of what they're applying for.
Your "why" should go beyond a generic desire and express your unique drive to make a tangible impact, relevant to the functions, context and mandate of the role and organization you're applying to.
Make them see that you "get it" (the mandate they're working on), that you're one of them (shared values), and that you know what you're applying for (understanding the role and the context). This adds credibility. This gives you a competitive advantage.
Reflection often ignites inspiration. So, carve out some time, this weekend perhaps? Grab a good pen, a cup of your favorite beverage, and let those thoughts flow.
