When optimism backfires

Finding a different perspective is something that comes up a lot in coaching. And one thing I’ve learned is that for a reframe to work, you have to believe it.
It can’t just be a shiny layer of optimism plastered on top of a negative belief.
Take interviews. It’s not uncommon for me to hear: “I just hate interviewing.” Trying to flip that into: “Oh, I just looove interviews!” doesn’t help, no matter how many times you repeat it. Because, quite frankly, you don't believe it!
When we repeat something we don't believe, it tends to backfire, and we get even more convinced of whatever it is that we're trying to think differently about.
Continuing with the interview example, a more useful reframe might be: “Interviews are an opportunity to share the experiences I’ve had, and the difference I can make in a team.”
Or go even more neutral: "Interviews are part of the path to job offers."
Feel the difference?
When it’s credible, it works.
So when you try to reframe your thoughts on something, ask yourself:
Is there at least a part of me that believes this new thought?
If not, keep adjusting until you find one that resonates and is believable to you.
Wishing you courage to reframe wisely.
