I haven't yet answered all the questions you sent me back in January, and I want to assure you that I am committed to addressing each one, slowly but surely.
Today, I'm responding to a question from Evelien about what competencies and experience the UN is looking for. It's a common question, with the unsatisfying answer of "it depends" 🙄
Often, we think of the UN in terms of high-level political positions or aid workers in blue vests - essentially, the roles that make the news. However, the UN, much like a government, encompasses a wide array of functions and requires a diverse range of talents and expertise to effectively function and make an impact.
From nuclear power specialists to medical professionals, food and agricultural experts, governance advisors, emergency response workers, and peacekeepers - the variety is astounding when you start to think about it. Whether you're a thematic expert, a program or project professional, or your strength is in operations, management or logistics, there's likely a niche for your skills within the UN system.
I encourage you to look at your own competencies and expertise through this lens:
In essence, the UN seeks passionate and committed individuals, humanitarians at heart, eager to apply their talents towards the greater good. And that's you, isn't it?
Wishing you the courage to explore, and the clarity to see your potential within the broad scope of the UN.
