Always be learning

Today I’m answering the first question from the recent Ask-Me-Anything survey:
How often do I need to improve my skills to stay interesting to employers?
Good question!
It’s not really about a fixed interval, but about adopting a mindset of continuous learning. In fact, many UN organizations include something along the lines of a "learning mindset" among their core competencies, so it's an important one!
Some areas of expertise move slowly (highly regulated fields, or areas of little commercial value tend to fall into this category). Others move much more quickly. With the mainstreaming of AI usage in the last couple of years, I'd say no field is safe from rapid change.
In short: Pace yourself. If your field evolves quickly, so should you.
Again, what matters most is that we adapt a stance of curiosity and learning, so that we stay abreast of new developments. Professional associations and industry leaders are often ahead of the game and worth following or becoming part of.
Also, it's important to blend formal and informal learning. As an example, in my coaching work, I re-certify every three years, so it's imperative that I sign up for formal training events regularly. But in between, I’m constantly learning through conversations, books, podcasts, peer discussions, and such.
Employers notice when you're curious, adaptable, and willing to evolve your skills and your thinking. You'll likely get more opportunities to learn and grow when you do, because you get recognized as someone with the interest and capacity to contribute with a higher, deeper, or wider scope – someone with potential.
I hope this answers your question! Follow-up questions are always welcome 🤗
Wishing you all much curiosity in your professional sphere!
PS. If you've read this with a sinking feeling – wishing you felt curious and eager to learn, but realizing you don't – then I'd encourage you to get really curious about that. Maybe it's time for a break. Or a career change. Or perhaps an upskilling initiative to reignite a sense of engagement. Need help figuring it out? I'd be delighted to support you.
