I’m curious — when was the last time you took a step back and looked at your application documents from a bird’s-eye view?

When we pull up our latest version to customize it for a new opportunity, it’s easy to dive straight into the details. And while getting those details right is important, sometimes our documents need more than just an update — they need an upgrade.

This might resonate with you if:

• You’ve been using the same format for more than 10 years (or since graduation — let’s face it, new grad formats don’t always fit established professionals).
• Your CV has grown without much editing — you’ve added new info without reducing the old.
• Your duties sound more like task lists than descriptions of responsibilities, achievements and impact.
• Your documents feel cluttered or, perhaps, even boring to read.

If any of these strike a chord, here’s how you can refresh and re-energize your applications:

1. Step away from your documents — literally, take your hands off the keyboard and turn off the screen.
2. Talk it out — describe your professional experience out loud, preferably with a friend or someone else that doesn't know you in a professional capacity. This can work wonders, helping you see things from a new angle and find fresh, more engaging ways to present yourself.
   
   Here are some prompts to get you started:
   
   • "When I worked at [employer], the difference I made was..."
   • "From my time at [employer], I’m most proud of..."
   • "My job title was [X], but what I really did was..."
   • "My manager was responsible, but I was actually the one who..."
   • "I’ve never had the title/it’s never been an official part of my responsibilities, but..."
   • "I’ve never done exactly [X] before, but..."
   • "I think I’d do great in that job because..."
    
3. Start fresh — when you get back to your desk, consider starting with a crisp new template (there are plenty online). A fresh start allows you to re-imagine your professional narrative and focus on what’s most relevant to where you are in your career right now.

Trust that what comes to mind is what matters most for where you are today — and that it’s enough to present yourself confidently to potential employers.
